Introduction

École Mountain View School provides comprehensive programming in English and French Immersion from kindergarten through grade seven. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, students participate in character-building activities helping them become responsible, caring citizens in our community. Our ‘Virtue Program’ focuses on one virtue every two weeks with lessons and examples for how our students can demonstrate that they are socially responsible citizens. The École Mountain View School Student Council provides activities for our students while providing financial assistance to those less fortunate around the world; Plan Canada, UNICEF, and World Vision to name a few. We are proud to host the Mountain View Jr. ATB, a banking branch staffed by students; developing financial, work, and leadership skills. With committed parent support through the School Council and active Canadian Parents for French in partnership with the school, all classes enjoy many field trips, school-based activities and events, specialized presentations, and monthly hot lunches. Our broad range of programs includes Music, Physical Education, Computer Technology, Cooperative Learning, Musical Theatre, and Outdoor Education, lunchtime reading clubs, and intramurals. School staff works collaboratively in professional learning teams to provide consistency and continuity in academic programming ensuring ÉMVS is a wonderful place to work, learn, and play!

Our dedicated staff remains current with best practices in education through ongoing professional development. Balanced assessment practices and differentiated instruction are implemented as we strive to meet the needs of all students. We believe that clear communication of achievement to students and parents is critical to ongoing success!

Principal

Principal’s Message

My name is Kurt Scobie and I am the principal of École Mountain View School. All three of my children have attended the French Immersion program at ÉMVS and I am proud of the education that we offer. I believe in our staff, and have seen them go above and beyond to make learning fun and meaningful. I am excited to be working with such a dedicated group of teachers and support staff. As the principal, I have made it my mission to learn every student’s name and to find a connection with each student at the school. I am also working toward developing relationships with all of the parents as well. I start my day on bus supervision and say good morning to students as they get off of the bus or as I walk through the playground on supervision. Students and staff realize that my office is open and accessible, and it is great to see everyone feeling far more comfortable in coming to see me. It is imperative that we listen to the concerns and beliefs of our parents and students so that they connect with the education we are trying to provide every day. Each day, we do announcements in French and English. While Mr. Corbeil is fully bilingual, I am not. I do my best each day to use the French language, and it has been quite an experience having students from all grades speak to me in French, and help to correct my grammar and pronunciation when I am in classrooms. At École Mountain View School, we have a leadership team that shares the responsibilities for ensuring that All Kids are our Kids and the academic Success for All. Louis Corbeil is our Assistant Principal, and a long time French Immersion advocate. He works with all teachers but is an important part of the French programming. He works alongside myself and teachers to ensure that quality teaching is taking place in our school. Nicole Hudson is our Learning Support Teacher. Mrs. Hudson works with all of our teachers to ensure that all Individualized Support Plans are meeting the needs of our students. Mrs. Hudson also provides intervention groups where students are working in smaller groups at their instructional level, regardless of grade. Our Family Liaison Councilor is Erica Funk. Ms. Funk connects with students and their families and helps to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety that can be felt by students and parents alike. The staff at École Mountain View School are dedicated to making sure that all students feel like they are connected to the school community. We believe that when we make strong personal connections to our students, then All Kids are our Kids. Our staff is continually working on connecting our students to the curriculum. Academic excellence is what we talk about in our professional collaboration time, discussions during staff meetings, and in our conversations with students so that there is Success for All. It is my sincere hope that students and parents alike feel that they are highly connected to our school. Our family of educators and support staff are here to serve. Please come to the school and let us know how we are doing.

Programs and Services

At École Mountain View School, we provide quality learning environments to ensure:

All students are successful through the division focus on Literacy

École Mountain View School is working literacy consultant Irene Heffel who is working with classroom teachers on literacy strategies in all subjects. This work is being individualized through classroom visits. Laurie- Ell Bashford is also working with teachers on Daily 5 and cooperative learning strategies to help improve literacy in all grades. Additionally, teachers are developing a common vocabulary in each of the subjects to have a common understanding of key concepts at each grade.

Student success through innovative, effective and appropriate uses of educational technologies

ÉMVS students have access to a variety of technologies that support student learning. Our work starts with the Google Suite of apps for education. Teachers are creating lessons that incorporate technology daily and our students are using a wide variety of technologies to demonstrate their learning in unique ways that are connected to real-world learning.

Our school community respects diversity and promotes inclusion

At École Mountain View School, classroom programming includes all of our students. Our virtue program highlights the best in our students and celebrates personal improvement for everyone. We believe that when there is a vested interest in learning each person’s unique gifts, real understanding and compassion will take place. It is our desire that we are meeting each student where they are, and moving them forward in their education.

First Nations, Metis and Inuit (Indigenous) student success

This year, ÉMVS held a very successful community-based Orange Shirt Day, with the help of our Indigenous Liaison and Friendship Center. We have also started working with our Indigenous Liaison to create a space for our indigenous population, including a K - 3 group and a 4 - 6 group that will meet weekly. As personnel change, it is our hope to continue to provide a space and a continued cultural connection for our indigenous students. Our teachers are also including indigenous perspectives and culture in the curriculum for all students.

Excellence in Teaching and School-Based Leadership

École Mountain View School is using generative dialogue and a sharpened focus on classroom instruction to move teachers towards excellence. The goal is to see the school’s instructional focus in classroom visits. The school-based leaders are working with classroom teachers to make sure that professional collaboration, classroom teaching, and assessment are all working towards ÉMVS’ goal of creating high-quality learning environments.
